National Service Scheme (NSS)

Aim

The aim of the National Service Scheme is service to the community while studying in an educational institution. It is sought to arouse the social conscience of students and provide them with the opportunity to work with the people around the educational campus.

Motto

The Motto of the National Service Scheme is "NOT ME BUT YOU". This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need to appreciate the other person's point of view first and to show consideration for fellow human beings. It also underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole. Therefore, the aim of the N.S.S. is to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.

Objectives

  • The N.S.S. volunteers should satisfy necessary conditions for obtaining various certificates issued by and through the N.S.S. organisation. To claim the N.S.S. general certificate, a volunteer should complete 120 hours of National Service Scheme each year with camp and special camp.
  • Volunteers should get their Service Record Books signed by the authorities immediately on completion of their work on the spot. They should also get it attested at least once a week by the N.S.S. Programme Officer.
  • Volunteers are expected to strictly adhere to the Code of Conduct prescribed for various projects. Leadership and merit certificates will be issued to those earning reputation for their persistence, initiative, imagination and personal dynamism, above all, character and integrity.
  • Volunteers attending weekend annual camps will get special certificates from the College.

Vision

To nurture socially responsible youth with a spirit of voluntary service, compassion, and leadership, dedicated to building a peaceful, inclusive, and healthy society.

Mission

  • To empower students with awareness and knowledge on health, safety, and community well-being.
  • To foster a strong sense of social responsibility, empathy, and service-oriented mindset among youth.
  • To promote active participation in humanitarian initiatives such as blood donation, health awareness drives, disaster relief, and environmental campaigns.
  • To equip young volunteers with the skills and readiness to effectively respond to emergencies and serve the community.

Activities

The Youth Red Cross (YRC), established in our college in association with the National Service Scheme (NSS) in the academic year 2005–2006, aims to educate youth about the principles of humanitarianism, compassion, and respect for human dignity. The unit encourages active participation in community service and volunteer activities, fostering a spirit of service and empathy among students. Through its initiatives, the Youth Red Cross strives to instill a sense of responsibility and commitment to making a positive impact on society.

The NSS activities are broadly classified into two categories:
